Happy Sad Exhibition

My most recent series of work “Privation” will be on display at the Happy Sad, Solent Showcase exhibition, it’s going to be a great show, with incredible works from across the art and design courses.

“Members of the public  will have a second  chance  to see some of finest work from graduating students studying on Southampton Solent’s creative courses at the University’s Showcase gallery this summer.

The exhibition is entitled ‘Happy Sad’, to reflect some of the themes of the work and to celebrate the students’ time at the University.
All the pieces have already featured in the BA (Hons) Degree shows for 2014 and include work from fine artists, photographers, illustrators, graphic artists and fashion students from a variety of disciplines.

Kate Maple, Curator of Solent Showcase, says: “It has been difficult to choose from all the fantastic work on display at this year’s degree shows but I am really pleased with the final selection.

“I think the public will get a flavour of the breadth, variety and skill shown by the students. The work is truly breathtaking and wouldn’t be out of place in any London gallery,” she continues.

The student artists being exhibited are: Emily Amesbury, Luke Baker, Giovanna Balivo, Nik Birkemeyer, Laura Carroll, David Cantrill, Craig Coull, Sophia Foot, Louis Goddard, Oliver Hall, Thomas Storm Hansen, Amber Henry, Laura Hunt, David Jones, Cory Labrosse, Alison Lashly, Amanda Leslau, Jody McCreery, Demi Haskell Mills, Emily Murphy, Rebecca Needham, Jade Phillips, Ashleigh Prime, Selina Quach, Sophie Reynard, Kristin Rian, Lizzie Robinson, Elizabeth Sherwin, Emma Simpson, Jack Snelgar, Ro Tomlin-Wills and Grace Williams.
The pieces have all been chosen from the following BA (Hons) degree shows: Fashion Photography, Fashion Styling, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Make-up and Hair Design and Photography.

I fully encourage everyone to take a look at the brilliant range of work featured on the website and for anyone on the BA course to submit their work.

Allan Sekula, Waiting for the Tear Gas, Tate Modern

Recently one of Sekula’s works has been exhibited in the Tate Modern as part of the Transformed Visions exhibition (2013) that explores the new kinds of expressive abstraction and the ongoing presence of the human figure; as well as the wider responses to violence and war. Waiting for the Tear gas chronicles emerging forms of Global Activism.

The exhibition consists of 81 images taken during the widespread protests against the world trade organisation Ministerial Conference held in Seattle, 30th November 1999. The series is presented as a 16 minuet slide sequence as well as also featuring as a contribution of 32 printed images in the book 5 Days that Shook the World, Seattle and Beyond, the both challenge the standard procedures of photojournalism, whilst documenting the fragmented collectivity that has come to define an era of mass social movements.

Sekula’s work is situated within a deep political context using both photography and the written word as mediums to create a multi-level critique of late capitalism. His works make critical contributions on questions of the social reality and globalisation, “The imaginary and material geographies of the advanced capitalist world”. What is impressionable in this particular series of images, is the human aspect, the multiplicity of the activists of the global justice movement, this is an aspect that is usually lacking from visual representations of globalisation.
