Rasmus Vasli

This week at university we were lucky enough to be joined by two guest speakers Marcio Mascarenhas and Rasmus Vasli ( who some of you may be familiar with through his blog Cup of Pea ) this was a great opportunity to hear two photographers talk about their work and very different approaches to portraiture.

Rasmus Vasli

Rasmus Vasli, Swedish photographer living in London and creator of the blog Cup of Pea, also gave us a lecture on his career and photography, it was fascinating to hear and see a completely different approach to photography within the same lecture.

Vasli talked about his recent series, Relative Values, which concerns what can we tell from a photograph? How do we read the relationships between subjects? "This project uses group portraiture to look at additions to the family unit through marriage. The relationships between the existing family members and the newcomer are subtly played out in the body language and facial expressions of the sitters. The work points to a situation most people have experienced, with all its potential tensions it makes for an intriguing if slightly uncomfortable view of family ties."

Some of you may already be familiar with Vasli's blog Cup of Pea, if not, I thoroughly recommend that you check it out. The blog is a accumulation of portraits of people he has encountered going about their day to day lives on the street, that he personally finds interesting or inspiring, not only does the blog consist of fantastic and interesting portraits, he also shares with us the stories of his encounters, and the subjects of the photographs.
